Downtown’s Golden Gate might have opened in 1906, but the casino keeps finding ways to evolve and keep guests coming back.

For example, Golden Gate recently unveiled an expanded high limit room, including some unexpected nods to the casino’s past.

When you’re in the high limit room, note the fringe on the walls (at right in the photo above). It was inspired by the costumes of the casino’s dancing dealers.

High

While The Gate’s previous high limit room only had table games, the new incarnation also boasts slot machines, including some of our favorites in all of Las Vegas (we’re looking at you, Top Dollar).

Don’t let the “high limit” in “high limit room” throw you off. This is still downtown Las Vegas, so a number of the “high limit” machines are dollar machines, with the option to raise the denomination if you find yourself in the middle of a lucky streak.

Fun fact: The higher the denomination on a slot machine, the higher the payback percentage.

For example, high denomination machines at downtown casinos return about 95% payback. Penny slots have a payback of about 88%.

But gambling isn’t the only appealing element of the new high limit room at Golden Gate, it’s the history.

While there are no signs to draw attention to it, guests will find a small door in the hallway leading to the high limit tables and machines.

Pull the handle, and you’ll find a portal to the past, a glimpse at one of the original walls of the hotel, back when it was the Hotel Nevada.

There’s a great item for your next downtown Las Vegas scavenger hunt!

Not too far from the original hotel wall display, there’s another hidden gem.

Walk through the high limit slot area and you’ll find a wall with a flapper, as well as a fountain from the earliest days of the hotel.

Casino officials aren’t sure if this was a drinking fountain or a water feature of some kind, but they do know the fixture was added in 1909. That’s more than 100 years ago, in case you’re not into math.

The fountain has been integrated beautifully into Golden Gate’s new high limit room, surrounded with dark wood.

We absolutely love that these treasures serve no practical purpose whatsoever. They’re simply an homage to the colorful history of the casino and curiosities for guests to seek out during their visit.

While you’re at Golden Gate Las Vegas, make sure to check out other changes, including expansions into the footprint of the former La Bayou casino (check out the eye-catching pillar of video monitors), as well as space once occupied by Du-Par’s restaurant.

There’s also a shiny new loyalty club desk.

The owners of Golden Gate also own The D Las Vegas, so players can now use their loyalty club card at either casino to earn perks. Learn more.
